Invertebrates (Flies, Grasshoppers, Crickets, Butterflies & Moths) 

 A large number of invertebrates have been recorded over the site particularly on Baty's Marsh. The list is not definitive but it gives a good picture of the wealth of life on the site.

Butterflies and Moths (Lepidoptera)

Below are the species that have so far been recorded on the site, but is not a definitive list (common names are used):

Speckled Wood Butterflies - are found on the grassland and marsh area.

 

Common Blue - common grassland butterflies 

 

Meadow Brown - common grassland butterflies 

 

Gatekeeper - common grassland butterflies 

 

Small heath - common grassland butterflies

 

Red admiral - common grassland butterflies

 

Small tortoishell - common grassland butterflies 

 

Large and Small Whites - common grassland butterflies

 

Burnet Moths 

 

Cinnabar Moths 

 

 

 

 

Grasshoppers and Crickets (Orthoptera)

There has been 2 species of grasshopper and 3 species of cricket recorded from the grassland and salt marsh area.

Metrioptera roeselii (N) - Roesel's Bush-cricket 

This cricket is nationally notable and is only recorded from grass land areas.

 

Chorthippus parallelus - Meadow Grasshopper 

This grasshopper likes coarse grassland and was found in the rank grassland and salt marsh. 

 

Chorthippus albomarginatus - Marsh Grasshopper 

This grasshopper was found in the rank grassland and salt marsh, and is known to be a characterisic species on the swards of Sea-couch.

 

Leptophyes punctatissima - Speckled Bush -cricket 

This cricket is found in rough herbage and scrub.

 

Conocephalus dorsalos - Short winged conehead Cricket 

Is found on the salt marsh when found in coastal areas, it is generally associated with salt marsh rush, sea rush and sea couch.

Flies - (Diptera) 

A total of 82 fly species have been recorded on the site, and some of the files that have been recorded are regarded as being nationally notable. 

Below is a summary of the flies on the site:

Dolichopodidae - Long-legged flies (total 13 species recorded)

Dolichopus strigipes (N) & Poecilobothrus principalis (N) are typical salt marsh fly species. 

Micromorphus albipes are found in sweeping coarse grasses in costal sites. 

 

Phoridea - Humped-back flies (total 4 species recorded)

Magaselia pallidizona (N) first Kent record 

 

Lauxaniidea - Acalyptrate flies (total 4 species recorded)

Homoneura consobrina (N) tends to be costal in distribution 

 

Chloropidea - Frit/grass flies (total 11 species recorded)

Elachiptera pubescens (N) a salt marsh species, the larvae requires one of the coastal grasses

Camarota curvipennis this fly has darkened wings which fold back over the addomen like an elytra of a beetle.

 

Tephritidae - Fruit flies (total 3 species recorded)

Paroxyna plantaginis is characteristic of salt marshes and develops in sea aster

 

Sphaeroceridae - Small dung flies (total 4 species recorded)

Leptocera fuscipennis is characteristic of salt marshes, often accuring in coastal mud

 

Scathophagidae - Dung Flies (total 2 species recorded)

Scathophaga litorea a characteristic fly of the coat, members of this genus are important predators of other flies

Limoniidae - Limoniid crane flies (total 2 species recorded)

Psychodidae - Moth or Drain flies (total 1 species recorded)

Scathopsidae - Minute black scavenger flies (total 1 species recorded)

Stratimoyiidae - Soldier flies (total 2 species recorded)

Hybotidae - Dance Flies (total 2 species recorded)

Lonchopteridae - Spear-winged flies (total 1 species recorded)

Syrphidae - Hover / flower flies (total 5 species recorded)

Tephritidae - Fruit flies (total 3 species recorded)

Otitidae - Picture-winged flies (total 1 species recorded)

Psilidae - Rust Flies (total 1 species recorded)

Sepsidae - Ensign Flies (total 3 species recorded)

Sciomyzidae - Marsh Flies (total 1 species recorded)

Pallopteridae - Fluter-wing flies (total 1 species recorded)

Asteiidae - Acalyptrate (total 1 species recorded)

Ephydridae - Shore flies (total 2 species recorded)

Drosophilidae - Vinegar flies (total 1 species recorded)

Agromyzidae - Leaf-miner flies (total 2 species recorded)

Tachinidae - no common (total 1 species recorded)

Sarcophagidae - Flesh Flies (total 1 species recorded)

Calliphoridae - Blow flies (total 2 species recorded)

Anthomyiidae - Root Maggots (total 2 species recorded)

Muscidae - House or Stables flies (total 7 species recorded)
